Out of His Mind

“I’m going to make a watch box,” Rob announced as he headed up to the studio last week.

“Is that because so many customers are asking about them?” I asked, thinking back to the many requests at last fall’s shows.

“No,” he answered. “Its because I want to see what one looks like.”

That’s how Rob works. First, a creation takes shape in his mind. Then, he measures, cuts, glues, sands, stains, waxes, and buffs until it comes to life in his hands.

The box came first.

He then got his hands on a springbok horn. (There’s a sentence you don’t run into a lot.)

Yep, it felt like a handle.

But something was missing. Something that would complete the sense of fantasy at play in the horn.

So he rooted through his boxes of rocks until he found this.

An amethyst cluster. Of course.

More gluing, sanding, waxing and buffing. The top came to life…

…And so did the completed the watch box.

Apparently Rob’s mind wasn’t satisfied because he did it AGAIN. This time, making a handle from a dazzling rock from Morocco known as a “septarian nodule.”

Both watch boxes contain five removable watch pillows nestled on a cushion of hand-dyed marbleized silk.

Now that they are out of Rob’s mind, you can take a closer look at them in our box gallery.
